Racing Analytical Services Limited (RASL) is a leading international racing laboratory providing sophisticated drug-testing services across equine, canine and human samples. Established in 1988 to provide drug testing for the Victorian Racing Industry, RASL has developed into one of Australia's leading specialist testing laboratories.

For an organisation operating in such a highly technical environment, the workplace needs to do more than accommodate people and equipment. It must support rigorous scientific processes while providing an environment where specialist teams can work, collaborate and connect.

Axiom Workplaces delivered the refurbishment of RASL's 1,000 sqm Melbourne facility, integrating a specialist testing laboratory with contemporary workplace amenities and a distinctive visual identity.

 The Challenge: Connecting Laboratory Performance with Workplace Experience 

Axiom approached the refurbishment as an integrated workplace environment rather than treating the laboratory and office as separate spaces.

The specialist testing laboratory forms the operational heart of the project. Long laboratory benches and dedicated analytical work areas provide a highly functional setting for RASL's technical activities, while exposed building services contribute to the precise, industrial character of the space.

Alongside these technical environments, Axiom incorporated collaborative workspaces and contemporary office settings to support interaction between employees and provide greater variety in how the workplace could be used.

This balance between specialist functionality and employee experience creates a workplace designed around both scientific performance and people.

Bringing the RASL Brand to Life 

One of the most distinctive elements of the commercial fitout is its connection to racing.

Large-scale racing graphics extend across the laboratory and workplace, transforming functional surfaces into prominent brand features. Against the predominantly monochromatic laboratory environment, flashes of racing colour create visual energy and give the facility an identity unique to RASL.

Rather than applying branding as a decorative layer, the racing imagery is integrated into the architecture of the workplace, reinforcing the organisation's purpose and heritage throughout the employee experience.

Away from the technical laboratory environment, a staff bar and social hub provides an informal destination for employees to meet, take a break and connect with colleagues.
