Guide: Designing Physical Containment Laboratories in Australia

Containment is won or lost in feasibility.

Physical containment (PC) laboratories are among the most technically demanding and capital-intensive fitout typologies in the Australian market. They sit at the intersection of complex services engineering, strict regulatory certification, and zero tolerance for delivery failure, a failed commissioning or certification is not a defect, it is a project that cannot open. The single biggest driver of cost, programme and certification risk is not the build, it is what was, or wasn't, tested before commitment. Base-building capacity, the confirmed containment level, regulatory pathway and airflow strategy must be interrogated at feasibility, not discovered in construction.

This paper sets out the trends, the engineering, the benchmarks and the risks, and Axiom's feasibility-led approach to de-risking them.
